'You keep looking at them like they're guilty,' the alien said, not turning around.
Rocky exhaled. 'They're eating a star. They don't care that the star has a planet with eight billion people on it.'
A long pause. Then the alien's hum shifted, dropped a half-step. 'Neither do you, when you are hungry. Neither do I. Guilt is a word for things that can choose. They cannot choose.'
Rocky pulled his face back from the glass. On the whiteboard behind him, a diagram of the symbiotic chain was half-erased, the last link circled three times in red marker. He picked up the marker. He had one more test to run, and if it worked, the Sun would keep burning for another four and a half billion years. If it didn't, he would have to figure out a second way, and he was not sure he had the time.
He capped the marker. He looked at the motes again. They were reaching for each other. He almost felt sorry for them. He turned and walked back to the console.
