Each detonation's blast wave strikes the plate, and the reaction force shoves the entire ship forward. He pressed his forehead against the cold viewport and watched the plate's surface glow a dull, fading amber against the black. Tau Ceti was still a star indistinguishable from a hundred others. He had maybe four or five charges left. Maybe fewer. He ran the numbers again on the cracked tablet, his fingers numb, and felt the old terror rise in his throat—the same terror as the first night, when he woke up alone and the ship was dead and the stars didn't care. But the math was clean. The geometry was right. He set the timer, sealed the blast door, and lay down on the deck plating, pressing both palms flat against the metal until the shudder hit. The Hail Mary kicked forward like a boxer's jab, and for one suspended second Rocky was weightless, and then the plate caught the fire and the ship was faster, and the stars ahead were a little closer, and he was still alive. He closed his eyes. Four or five more. He could do four or five more.

How the book describes it working. The design is a pusher-plate system. A large, reinforced plate is mounted at the rear of the vessel. Nuclear devices are positioned on the plate's surface and detonated in sequence. The blast wave strikes the plate, and Newton's third law does the rest: the ship accelerates forward. Between detonations the ship coasts ballistically. There is no continuous thrust; the velocity profile is a staircase, each step a small, violent shove. Rocky must calculate the correct firing angle, the correct charge yield, and the correct interval between blasts to build up the right velocity vector without overloading the plate or the hull structure.
Limitations and risks. The charge count is finite and non-renewable. A miscalculated geometry can shear the plate or rupture the aft bulkhead. The ship's automation is partially degraded, so Rocky is doing by hand what a full engineering crew would have automated. There is no secondary drive, no escape vector if a detonation goes wrong. The system also generates enormous thermal and radiation loads on the plate and nearby structures, meaning Rocky must monitor structural integrity between shots and cannot simply fire as fast as he wants. In practice, the propulsion system is as much a resource-management puzzle as a physics problem, and that duality is what makes it so central to Rocky's character arc.
