Panning is the basic geological prospecting technique Rocky uses during his desperate solo survival on the planet Apsu. After his crew perishes and he is stranded with no supply chain, he must find usable metals in the local regolith to build a rocket capable of reaching orbit. Panning—sifting sediment through water or a simple sieve to concentrate heavier mineral particles—becomes his primary method of identifying and collecting the metallic ores he needs for smelting and fabrication.
Though it is a low-tech, almost pre-industrial method, panning is the critical first step in Rocky's chain of resource extraction. Without knowing where the metals are and in what concentration, he cannot plan a smelter, a furnace, or a rocket. He'd already hauled three buckets of material from the outcrop above, and his lower back had been screaming since the second one. Now it was time to see if any of it was worth the ache.
He tipped the pan into the shallow stream—just a thin ribbon of meltwater running down the channel, barely a finger wide—and swirled it. The sediment clouded, then settled. He tilted the pan, let the lighter silt wash over the lip in a thin brown sheet, and watched. One pass. Two. Three. The water cleared. And there, in the bottom of the pan, a faint dark glint that wasn't there before. Not gold, not silver—something denser, something with the dull grey-green sheen of a base metal ore. He brushed the last of the silt away with his thumb and stared at the grain. Small. Maybe a centimeter of actual metal in two buckets of dirt. But it was there. It was real. He could build a furnace around it. He could build a rocket around that.
He sat back on his heels, wiped his face with a sleeve, and laughed—a short, exhausted bark of sound that echoed off the grey rock walls. Then he picked up the pan and went back for more.

Concentration can be very low (a few percent or less), meaning enormous volumes of waste material must be processed. It is also physically exhausting, time-consuming, and offers no guarantee. Rocky has no assay equipment; he's reading color, density, and luster by eye. A misread could waste days—or send him prospecting in the wrong direction entirely.
