Engineering the Device is the climactic technical arc of Project Hail Mary, in which Ryland Grace and Rocky must design, assemble, and fire a weapon of last resort to destroy the Astrophage—the microscopic organisms devouring their respective stars. What begins as a desperate improvisation from salvaged ship components becomes a race against extinction, with both civilizations' survival hanging on whether the machine works on the first try.
